The Gaispfad Kabinett Trocken is for me one of the diminutive masterpieces of the Mosel. This wine and Stein’s Palmberg Kabinett Trocken are the two wines that made me realize the greatness of this genre.
For me the Gaispfad Kabinett Trocken always tastes like iron and thyme with nearly no fruit to speak of. Made from 90-year-old, ungrafted vines, in 2024 because of the difficulties, only 500L were made. A wine that is more to be experienced than described—intense structure and yet evaporative and completely seamless. This is plain and simple a wine for the absolute mineral freaks.

Mosel Fine Wines | The 2023er Trarbacher Gaispfad Riesling Kabinett Trocken is a bone-dry wine (less than 2 g/l of residual sugar) harvested on very old, un-grafted vines and was fermented and matured in Fuder. It offers a beautifully spicy and finely herbal, fresh nose of candied lime, white flowers, rosemary, thyme, ginger, and cassis. The wine is straight and very pure on the dynamic and taut palate. The finish proves superbly long and vibrating, and delivers plenty of fine spices and citrusy zest, together with salty elements. This compact, racy, and above all light bone-dry Riesling is very impressive. | No 71 June 2024 |
