Vollenweider is quite simply, among the greatest practitioners of Kabinett on planet earth, part of a very small and elite group including Julian Haart, Egon Müller, Lauer, Weiser-Künstler and Willi Schaefer. Try and buy as much of this as you can.
“Wurzelecht” translates to ungrafted – indicated by the drawing of gold vine roots on the front label – is a selection from the ‘Jon’ section of the Goldgrube containing 100-year-old, ungrafted vines. The first release of this wine was in 2023 and while it is still young, this may just be the platonic ideal of a Kabinett at the top of its class. Here the 2024 is incredibly mysterious and layered with a deep reductive nose from the spontaneous fermentation. Completely seamless and harmonious, this in a way is more representative of the old vines than vintage.

| Mosel Fine Wines | The 2024 Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Kabinett, as it is referred to on the consumer label (and with a drawing of vine roots in gold, the reference to - Wurzelecht- is left for the back label), is a fruity-styled wine made from a selection of very old, un-grafted vines in the Jon sector of the vineyard. It offers a beautiful nose made of bitter grapefruit, herbs, smoke, whipped cream, and smoke. The wine proves superbly elegant, refined, and precise on the palate and leaves a hugely focused and persistent finish. What a stunner in the making! | No 75 July 2025 |
