Kissinger‘s acquisition of less than two hectares total (!) in the fabled Roter Hang has become one of the more talked about additions to the landscape of Grand Cru dry German Riesling. Rarely does a place with such a deep history come into the hands a winemaker just beginning to define his signature and style.
We first barrel-tasted these wines in late-summer of last year: They are dense, almost brooding, with a compact yet formidable power. In the stunning, and cool, 2024 vintage, they flaunt a rather polished yet stern acidity. They are impressive and statuesque. What a vintage for a premiere!
Orbel, though a less well-known vineyard, is a stunning site further west, away from the river. It is quite steep and benefits both from a more southern exposure, and the countering cooler wind from the east. The wine is somewhere between Pettenthal and Hipping in style, though lighter and less structured.
