The word Schöttel comes from the German word “Schüttung,” meaning scree or debris, referring to the massive stone cliff overhead and the rather-too-constant barrage of rocks that shower down from it into the vineyard. Here the soil is much poorer, much more stony than in the “Jonspfad.” Yet the site is a touch more southern-facing, so while the wine is denser and more saline than the “Jonspfad,” it is also more generous, more effusive due to the extended hours of sunlight. Even after sunset, the rock wall continues to radiate the heat it has absorbed during the day, creating a warm, sheltered microclimate.
The wines from Im Schöttel reflect this distinctive environment: they are saline, generous, and dense, with a darker, more powerful mineral core then Unterste Jonpfad—yet always framed by the freshness and precision of a cool-climate origin.
