Rochus means anger or rage. It also refers to the french word “roche” which means rock. The grapes come from two different plots of the Rochusfels site with around 200 m above sea level. Very argilliferous sites with south-west exposure.

Vintage 2023 was made from a mix of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Elbling aged in small barrels until August 2024, then disgorged 20 months later in March 2026.

Jonas shares “Sparkling wine is still a ubiquitous trend, but I feel more committed to the tradition of my father, who has been producing very good sparkling wines since the mid-1980s. Sparkling wines with a low dosage have been my favorites right from the start.”

The Rochus #23/1, as it is referred to on the central part of the label, was made from an equal blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Elbling harvested in 2023 which was fermented and aged in used oak barrels until August 2024 as well as a small selection of reserve wines before being bottled, aged on its lees, and then disgorged without dosage with little SO2 added (20 mg/l) in March 2026 (the disgorgement date is written on the label). It initially offers a quite herbal, smoky, and earthy nose of dark spices, wild herbs, and flintstone before delivering riper notes of pear, red apple, acacia, and yellow peach. The mousse proves already well integrated on the palate, and the wine nicely combines rich yellow fruits, brioche, creamy elements, and coffee bean with nice, ripe acidity. This is a superb Sekt, made in a richer style
