This is a unique wine for Stefan; a skin-contact wine that ferments and ages on the skins and stems for, in the case of the 2020, a full 22 months. “Schale, Steil & Stengel” translates to “skins, seeds and stems.”
The wine has a partridge-eye color, the very beginning of a sunrise – which is unique for a Vetter wine, which normally flirts with green-yellow. The wine is damn near fruity compared to the oceanic quality of most Vetter wines; one notes all sorts of stone fruits, red fruits… maybe even some tart, wild blueberries.
What’s outrageous or impressive about this wine is the finesse, the delicacy. Yes, it has texture and grip like an “orange wine,” but it is not at all heavy or cloudy. In fact, the presentation, if not weightless, is compact and linear.
None other than the New York Times’ Eric Asimov wrote about one of Stefan Vetter’s Sylvaners as a “most memorable bottle of 2018.”
